Raising the Tobacco Age
¨Raising the legal minimum age for cigarette purchaser to 21 could gut our key young adult market” (Morris). His research is getting out the point that 18 year olds are still in high school and can distribute tobacco products to the younger generations. If the age for smoking was 21; not as many younger people would have access to tobacco. So there would be a smaller population of adolescents that use of tobacco. There may be no way to stop smoking for everyone, but it is possible to reduce the amount of tobacco users. If the age is higher to buy then, 18 year olds in highschool can’t buy and give to others. My solution is making identification more strict so there isn’t any getting away with a fake ID. Getting the whole country to agree to raising the age can keep adolescents from using it in other areas. Raising the smoking law could lower the age of high school smokers and eventually lower the rate all around.
In 2016, 4 million U.S middle school students were using tobacco products. In some cases half of that were using more than just one product of tobacco. About 2 in 100 students, 2.2%, high school and middle school were proven to have smoked in the last 30 days. With use of any type of tobacco, 20 in 100 students, 20.2%, were proven to

Spreading information and awareness about the harmful effects of smoking can help warn the younger population. If the age range is higher than 18, there won't be an easy way for 18 year olds to give it to the kids that want it in there high school. Buying tobacco isn’t all that strict because you can easily miss something on the ID, or it could even be fake, showing 2 types of ID could be more of a guarantee of their age. A big factor to a solution is that if everyone changes the tobacco law to 21, because if it were only a few states it wouldn’t stop them from getting it anywhere

As per Center Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) the number of the e-cigarettes users among middle and high school in 2013 has been more than tripled compared to 2011 (CDC, 2014, September 22). Although some argue that if a man or woman is old enough to fight for our country, they are old enough to decide about smoking. While some might agree, this law ultimately protects high school students from corruption of electronic cigarettes. The first three months of this new law involved educating the public of the new law, and handing out warning instead of fines (Bussewitz). Another example includes two bills in California called SB 140 and SB 151. These anti-tobacco laws deem that anyone under the age of 21 cannot…

With all the education, and with all the nudging, it became much easier for lawmakers to start banning smoking in public places, even in places smoking was traditionally accepted like bars and bowling alleys. I am going to talk how smoking is still a problem amongst teenagers. In the article “ E-Cigarettes Use Double Among Students, Survey Shows,” Sabrina Tavernise writes about how teenagers end up using E-Cigarettes a lot more. E-Cigarettes are battery-powered devices that give nicotine that is vaporised, which from that it turns into aerosol mist. Sellers would advertise them as an alternative for smoking, but researchers say their health effects are not yet clear. Dr. Kenneth Warner, a professor of health management and the policy at the University of Michigan school of Public health, looked back through the data and found that among kids who have never smoked a cigarette, only 0.7% have ever tried an e-cigarette within the last 30 days.…

In the first place, Tobacco Free Kids states, “Raising the legal minimum age for cigarette purchaser of 21 could make our average age expectancy up.” Raising the minimum age to smoke will make lives longer due to the fact that smokers won’t be smoking for as long. So since every cigarette takes off 7 minutes, then the less you smoke the more time you will live. And if you have a kid, it will most likely not be at 18 so you won't want to smoke around your child so that could stop you from smoking. All this could come…

The strategy to help lower rates are to prevent youth from starting smoking, helping people quit smoking, helping Canadians protect themselves from second hand smoke, and reducing promotion of tobacco product by administering the Tobacco Act (Health Canada, 2012). By targeting these key factors which all contribute to people wanting to smoke then this will lower the rates. The most important strategy in reducing smoking among Canadians is education.…
