Besides all the agony slaves already endure when they do what their master pleases the punishments are even harsher. A document called “An Essay on the Conversion of African Slave in the British Sugar Hill Colonies” by James Ramsey, who was a doctor in the Sugar Hills, described what he saw happening to the slaves. James Ramsey stated,
The ordinary punishments of slaves, for the common crimes of neglect, absence from work, eating sugar cane, theft, are cart whipping, beating with a stick, sometimes to the breaking of bones, the chain, an iron cook about the neck… a Jenkins 2 ring about the ankle, and confinement in the dungeon. There have been instances of slitting of ears, breaking of limbs, so as to make amputation necessary, beating out of eyes, and castration… In short in the place of decency, sympathy, morality, and religion; slavery produces cruelty and oppression. The African slaves in the British colonies (American) are just one example of the pain that slaves endure for punishment.
