The life of a former slave
Douglass uses ethos, pathos, and logos to unveil the heinous truths of slavery from a more credible point of view. These three modes of persuasion are used effectively throughout The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by giving descriptive scenarios and showing valid knowledge of events going on during the time period. By the information given by Douglass, it creates a realistic idea of how slavery was really like then, compared to what is said today. Pathos is shown to the most effective appeal Douglass uses because, it gives more insight on the effects of being a slave and the way they were treated.
Logos is the literary device used to convince readers by using reason or logic. Douglass uses logic mainly in chapter seven. Douglass found an intelligent way to learn what other slaves could not. For example, Douglass stated, “I used to spend time writing in the spaces left in master Thomas’s copy-book, copying what he had written. I continued to do this until I could write a hand very similar to that of Master Thomas. Thus, after a long, tedious effort for years, I finally succeeded in learning how to write”(55-56). Also by

Douglass a firsthand experience of slavery with being a former slave. Knowledge was influential to him and he states that, “This bread I used to bestow upon the hungry little urchins, who, in return, would give me that more valuable bread of knowledge”(49). In this, he values education and his knowledge as power. Douglass also would read arguments that were against slavery and would realize how wrong and evil the society is. This knowledge is found in the following: “The more I read, the more I was led to abhor and detest my enslavers, I could regard them in no other light than a band of successful robbers, who had left their homes, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes and in a strange land reduced us to slavery”

    Furthermore, education among slaves became a privilege never granted to those enslaved, but to those who were white and free, contradicting slaves and any form of knowledge. Douglass therefore figured that he would never escape the predetermined life or fate he possessed.
