The Cherokee slaves of the 1842 slave riot attempted escape but were unsuccessful. The Cherokee culture made a huge push to become more like the white Americans (10 Incredible). Being more like the white Americans, they decided to capture slaves to help them work on their farm and have them help around the town. Thinking that slaves will help them for only these reasons, they were very surprised by the end of the riot. By 1842, there were over 4,000 slaves owned by the Cherokee (10 Incredible). Overall, the Cherokee passionately pursued slavery which caused the Slave riot of 1842 to begin.

The next morning, the Cherokee owners learned that all their slaves disappeared. Immediately the Cherokees went to each other and realized that all the slaves had disappeared. The Cherokees joined together with their neighboring tribe, the Creek Indians, to search for the runaway slaves. It took the two tribes several days to catch up to the slaves. Once the Creeks and Cherokees caught up to the slaves, they began to fight each other. They fought for 2 days straight. The Cherokees and Creeks also took the problem to the National Cherokee Council. The council decided to help the slave owners by sending out a bigger search party. The Cherokees became more effective with their slave ownership; such as creating stronger slave codes and they found a company who finds and captures runaway slaves.
