Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill was created by Pieter Claesz in 1628. It is representative of the Baroque era of art. The medium on which it is created is wood and oil paints are used, it is 9 1/2 in X 14 1/8 in. The subject of the piece is the fleeting moments in life symbolized by various naturalistic objects. Currently this piece is being displayed at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 635.
In the Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill, you see a skull sitting atop a ragged book and misc papers placed on a table; an incense burner is to the left of the skull and a tipped over wine glass to the right of the skull, almost as if it is protruding from the side of the skull itself; in front of the skull lies a writing quill. The colors utilized all compliment the other which adds to the unity; this in itself supports the idea as to how life is finite and we as mortals are as well. Balance is attained through the naturalistic rendering of each item portrayed. The proportions are natural which creates balance when viewing the piece and moving across the painting. The proportions are all realistic so no item looks abnormally large or small, the details such as the windows reflecting in the wineglass support these natural proportions.
The colors used in this painting are beautiful and rich. Various shades of brown, yellow, white, and orange emphasized with shades of grey and stark black. Each color enhances the natural appearance of the items presented. The contrast of each item is just right, there is nothing that is overtly standing out. The naturalistic style of painting as well as the versatility of oils allows for the texture of each item to really shine, almost as if I reached out and touched the feather of the quill I would be able to feel the soft wisps, or if I were to run my fingers along the skull I would feel the hard and jagged characteristics that define bone.
Overall, this was by far my favorite piece to analyze and view. I love the colors and contrast. I have discovered that I really enjoy the naturalistic style of art. I love that the reality of the times in which the piece is created

This is a pastel painting of a skull with horns. It is the product of the chiaroscuro technique, drawing objects with the perspective of light when there is an absence of it. This would not be considered fully representational but enough so because the viewer can understand that the painting being showed is a skull. It fits into the category of expressive content; the painting’s colors -red, black and orange- shows that pent up anger, confusion and other emotions that surrounds the skull, with is representative of a person. There is a balance of 40% white to 60% black making the bone white skull standout, making it the focus of the artwork (dominance).…

Identity and celebration of life were very important in the ancient world. In some civilizations, a person’s identity is the most important part of death, as their identity serves as a key to the afterlife. In other civilizations, identity is also important, but they focus more on how the person lived their life because, in the end, death comes to everyone. I will be discussing two pieces: The Skull Mosaic and Akhenaten and Family. While these two pieces may seem like an odd comparison, I believe these pieces show how important or how unimportant identity can be, and how a person’s fortune may affect the way we view the art.…

The Jericho Skull is also considered the oldest portrait in the museum's collection, and, until recently, its most enigmatic: a truncated human skull covered in worn plaster, with eye sockets set with simple sea shells that stare out blindly from its display case. Now, thanks to digital imaging, 3D printing, and forensic reconstruction techniques, specialists have recreated the face of the individual inside the Jericho Skull—and it turns out to belong to a 40-something man with a broken nose. Waldemar Kolbusz, thoughtfully dubbed “Design Aficionado" by his peers and admirers, is an Australian, mostly self-taught artist who was born in 1969. While he went through formal schooling and training as an accountant, he began his full-time career as an artist in 2000 at thirty-one years old. By using oil, wax, and stained canvases, he focuses mainly in abstract paintings in solo and group exhibits that show emphasis on color and shape. Within these subcategories, Kolbusz deems his work as “expressionistic” and works to show contrast within hue and the movement within shape to evoke emotion and reactions from viewers. While his art is abstract, he focuses on life-like shapes and movements within his paintings by creating intense, organic…

To attract and keep the attention of the audience in a genre as stale and traditional as still life painting can be a difficult task, but many painters have risen to the challenge in the hundreds of years since its invention. These methods are numerous and involve the exploration of tensions such as those that exist between abstraction and representation, or moralizing versus hedonistic. Considered one of the lowest types of art by the French Academy, Still Life with a Bottle of Rum, Shoes, and Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill are three still paintings that have managed to rise above the typical wave that have been produced by artists of varying skills for centuries. Though looking at each alone does not truly illuminate the reasoning…

There is a balance of unity and variety in the piece. There is unity in the piece by how the walls are all the same color and the flooring is the same, and there is variety in the room by how the piece has pictures of the artwork on the wall that seems to be a little crooked, and the chairs being tilted. There appears to be a pattern in the floor in the piece The Bedroom just like real hardwood flooring has. There is balance in this piece by how there is a window in the room, and how there are two of the same types of chairs in the room. The room is asymmetric by if a person were to cut the piece in half, it would not be the same on both sides, so the piece does have asymmetric balance.…

For example, the dirt underneath the feet of the people looking up to Jesus, and the clothing on the people has a really good texture and pattern, whereas I could almost feel as if I could reach out and touch it. The brush strokes in the background of the painting where the sunset has a vigorous balance to it and he used his skills of brush strokes in places where it should be, it also gives a 3d dimensional effect to it. Also, the balance between light and dark side, there is the devastating and depressing dark side and then there is the pure and bright side, it makes the audience feel complete to this piece rather than confused on what they are seeing. I understand where he was going with this piece, and can appreciate the meaning behind of his work. He painted so well, it was like he painted a biography of Jesus.…
