This piece is titled Vishnu as Varaha, The Cosmic Boar. It tells the story of the the Hindu god, Vishnu and how he took the form of a boar to rescue the world from a demon who imprisoned the earth beneath the cosmic ocean. This piece depicts Vishnu as having an entirely human body with a boar’s head, not unlike the shape of a minotaur. Though the color and texture of this sculpture would have me to believe it has nothing to do with an ocean. This piece is entirely a sand like color and has a chunk taken out of the right corner, that I presumed eroded away in a large sandstorm.…

Marcus and Sabloff both illustrate ten themes, which they believe to be the best ways of conducting successful research of ancient cities. The three themes that I found to be most relevant and useful are: establishing the stratigraphic history of the city’s center and its associated monuments, documenting the subdivisions and building blocks, and studying the roads and trade networks that linked cities together. These three aspects are vital in analyzing an ancient Mesopotamian city’s power, religious status, morals, and security. As covered in lecture, Mesopotamian cities, especially Uruk, took great pride in their temples, palaces and monuments. These elite structures were placed at each city’s center and each often had its own set of walls…

The first work of art I chose is the Pair of Winged Deities. The works are of Assyrian origin, and were created circa 874 – 860 B.C.E. out of Gypsum. What drew me to these reliefs, and caused me to choose them, is the organized and rigid nature of them. Every detail, be it on the beards, wings, hair, or clothing, is clearly defined by deep indentations of solid, dark lines and curves. Though the faces and bodies are not particularly true to life in their depiction, their stylized nature gives them character and uniqueness.…

The main difference is the objects themselves, Anavysos Kouros is an object is carved all the way around. The Marble Grave Stele is an object that is only to be seen from a frontal view. Both of these objects are made of marble and seem to be the same color so there is a chance that they are made of the same marble. Both of these objects seem to be around the same height, the stele stands at 67 inches (5.5 feet tall) and Anavysos Kouros stands 6 feet 4 inches tall, a little…
