The startling effects of climate change is all around us. On the news we see baby polar bears standing on ice cubs and factories pumping out CO2, but what about the problems no one sees? This time November I would usually be suiting up in my ski gear, getting ready to surf the ‘gnar powder. However, what with the unpredictable weather that climate change creates, the mountains are more brown than white! While this may sound too horrific to be true, the reality is that climate change is more radical than any trail I’ve ever shedded. The winter sports industry generates almost nine billion dollars in state and federal taxes, not to mention the many retired dads and college sophomores they employ. Over the last decade the ski industry has lost over a billion dollars in total revenue. That’s right! A billion! If I had a billion snowflakes for every dollar lost in aggregated earnings, I might be able to ski the bunny hill. This absurd downfall had led to a 10% decrease in employment within the ski industry. Your homies on the mountain could be next! However, turns out the earth is freaking out because of us humans! Thats right, even the gnarliest skiiers on this side of the mountain are responsible for the snow melting. May seem ironic, but there are so many factors leading up to skiing that actually release these climate changing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
