Shedding Light Through Art “In order for the artist to have a world to express he must first be situated in this world, oppressed or oppressing, resigned or rebellious, a man among men” ~Simone de Beauvoir (qtd. in “Quotes About Expression” ). Art is a great way to express yourself and help others show what they are experiencing. These artists use their various talents to shed light on what is taking place around them for the better understanding of viewers. One person who has helped show what is happening in his hometown is photographer Devin Allen. Allen is a 26 year old Baltimore native. He captures images of the protests and riots in his city. According to the article “A Young Photographer's Images,” it all started when a man named Freddie Gray died in police custody. Ito is a graffiti artist who protested during the World Cup of 2014 in his country of Brazil. The people of Brazil felt outraged that FIFA was abusing Brazil’s economy and neglecting the poor (“Need Food, Not Football”). They believe that the money should have been spent on bettering transportation, healthcare, and education. Although Brazilians are very passionate about football, roughly one million stormed the streets demanding the cancellation of World Cup. Ito says, “It’s a good way to expose the country’s problems. If the government doesn’t want to expose these things it’s because they feel ashamed. If they feel ashamed by this they might take it more seriously - at least, that’s our intention” (qtd. in “Need Food, Not Football”).
