In Jonas’s society they have certain laws and rules to maintain a utopia. For example, they cannot joke around about getting released because that is a big deal. “Even the children were so scolded if they used the term lightly at play, jeering at a teammate who missed a catch or stumbled in a race.”(Lowry 3). In our society we can say what we want freely however you can be disciplined if you say certain things in certain places. Release means death. You can joke about death, but you will still be judged and/or scolded for it. It is a rule not to keep your feeling to yourself. “This evening he almost would have preferred to keep his feelings hidden. But it was, of course, against the rules.”(Lowry 9). In our society we can keep our feeling to ourselves unless we would like to share. In Jonas’s society you have to speak with precision of language. “And of course our community cannot function smoothly if people don't use precise language.”(Lowry 127). It's important to use proper language. However we use many words very loosely. Jonas’s society and modern day society practice a lot of things different yet have some similarities. After reading The Giver it seems a dystopia can be better than a utopia. In Jonas’s society they are so strict and it feels that if you're not perfect you cannot live there. Having freedom in life is great and they should get to learn what it feels like. In contrast a utopia
