What Is The Message Of The Giver By Lois Lowry

Improved Essays
The Giver was written by Lois Lowry and was originally published in 1993. The book follows the story of a twelve year old boy named Jonas who lives in a dystopian world, in a place called ‘The Community’. I enjoyed reading this because there was a strong hidden message that carried on throughout the book. As a whole it was intriguing, but I found it slightly confusing because some details didn’t seem to have much of a connection to the overall story. The story takes place in ‘The Community”, which is a place that is isolated from the rest of the world. In The Community, all memories of how the world used to be, for example war, colour and feelings were taken from the citizens many generations before Jonas’ to hide them from all of the negative

In The Giver, Lois Lowry utilizes imagery, shift, and tone to depict the giver’s self-destruction, sacrifice, and suffering to reveal his values. Early on we learn that the elders continuously dismiss the giver’s advice as a feeble grab for power because they lack the experience they need to recognize the bleak future they will face without changing their actions as he repeatedly tries to establish. The pretentiousness, they show when he confronts them with this dismal truth only furthers the givers need to release the memories to Jonas who can in turn release them to the community.…

The book, which takes place in a dystopian society established on the principles of conformity, offers complex questions to children in a less severe, but equally as thought provoking manner. It provokes questions about the importance of fitting in (or lack thereof), the ethics involved with murder, and how to prevent ourselves from becoming the emotionless humans in the book. The symbolism in The Giver is also very accessible to younger readers, such as the entire community being described as devoid of color, symbolizing the drabness of a world where everyone is forced to be the same. This in turn intensifies the messages and questions given throughout the book by not only providing the readers with a story, but also offering literary devices that enhance the meaning of events in the book.…
