An issue that is hotly debated is the current early school start times. It is clear though, that school should start later for middle and high school students, because the current early start times cut into kids’ sleep, and reduces their overall performance because of lack of sleep.

One reason that school should start later is because the students are not getting enough sleep. For example, cdc.gov says, “The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that teenagers aged 13 to 18 years should regularly sleep 8 to 10 hours per day for good health.” These hours are harder to get if school starts so early. Furthermore, Ashley Yeager, from sciencenewsforstudents.org says, “A first school bell just after 8 a.m. slices into the 8.5 to 9.5

For example, cdc.gov says, “Not getting enough sleep is common among high school students and is associated with several health risks including being overweight, drinking alcohol, smoking tobacco, and using drugs, as well as poor academic performance. One of the reasons adolescents do not get enough sleep is early school start times.” These are all huge problems in high school, sometimes even in middle school. If the way to prevent, or even to minimize this stuff is by helping kids get more sleep, then schools should definitely start later in order to help the students. Also, Ashley Yeager tells sciencenewsforstudents.org, “This professional group includes more than 60,000 doctors who treat or study children. In 2014, the group recommended that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 a.m.” A huge study has gone into this, and clearly it is a better decision to postpone the start of school. Furthermore, Mark Fischetti tells scientificamerican.com, “She published a large study in February that tracked more than 9,000 students in eight public high schools in Minnesota, Colorado and Wyoming. After one semester, when school began at 8:35 a.m. or later, grades earned in math, English, science and social studies typically rose a quarter step—for example, up halfway from B to B+.” That is a huge grade difference, and will definitely help the kids
