Socially valued resources are crucial elements of society that an individual needs in order to live healthily and happily. One of the largest problems Australia is currently facing is the many asylum seekers arriving on our borders seeking a safe refuge from their own nations. Once here, they are detained in detention centers, and it is here that they experience social inclusion and exclusion, especially in regards to obtaining socially valued resources.

Socially valued resources are essential in life, they allow for society to be healthy and happy, but the evidence of a severe lack of these resources are showing the true extent of social exclusion asylum seekers are experiencing. This culture of social exclusion has unfortunately been apparent through a great deal of Australia’s history, evident through the ‘White Australia Policy’, the law that prohibited ‘undesirable’ migrants from entering Australia’s borders and settling. Whilst this law has been removed from the Australian legal system, the thought process behind it has engraved itself into Australian culture and has been adopted by many, particularly those in the later generations of society, thus highlighting the social exclusion asylum seekers are forced to endure. The macro world asylum seekers are open to are generally ones of hate and distress, the country they are running to in times of crisis labeling them as illegal criminals and forcing them into crowded detention centers for years on end, with only a slight possibility of being able to achieve asylum. The extent of exclusion is explored through various reports, for example the ‘Asylum Seeker Health and Wellbeing’ report commissioned by the St Vincent’s Health Australia organization stated “Having access to fewer economic resources directly impacts on the amount of social participation that can be enjoyed …show more content…
This also has a negative impact on the behaviour of the children as they don’t have enough to occupy their time constructively.” Evidently, there are many examples supporting the fact that asylum seekers experience social exclusion in detention centers in Australia.
There are explicit examples for both the experiencing of social inclusion and exclusion in regards to accessing socially valued resources. The inclusion of access to a just legal system and the ability to find employment, contrasting to the exclusion of health care and education show Australia needs to do more to ensure they are treated humanely and with respect to their basic human
