Fox’s goal was to raise $1 million for cancer research and grow more awareness towards cancer. No one had attempted to run across Canada at this time, but attempting to run across Canada with an artificial leg, was crazy. After Fox had dipped his leg in the water of St John's harbour he started his Marathon of Hope. During the first week of his run he was faced with hilly terrain, snow and cold. This was not easy at all. While he was getting closer to Quebec there were occasional honks and not a lot of money being donated. When Fox entered Hawkesbury, Ontario, on June 28, 1980 he was greeted by a brass band and thousands of balloons that were released into the sky printed with the slogan, "Welcome Terry. You can do it." His next location was the nation's capital Ottawa. When fox got to Ottawa he got to meet the Governor General, Ed Schreyer. Fox was greeted by cheering crowds everywhere he ran in Ontario. He was being treated like a superstar now. There was a lot of success fundraising southern in Ontario, sometimes he would raise $20 000 a day. His hard work was starting to pay
