Sexual Education Beneficial or Unnecessary? AVERT defines Sex Education as the process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships and intimacy. Sexual education is also about developing young people’s skills so that they make informed choices about their behavior, and feel confident and competent about acting on these choices. Some people argue that sexual education should not be taught in or out of the home. As of today, sexual education is mandatory in public schools in just 22 of the 50 states in the U.S. (United States).
Each year, U.S. teens experience as many as 850,000 pregnancies, and youth under the age 25 experience about 9.1 million sexually transmitted infections. By age 18, 70 percent of U.S. females and 62 percent of U.S. males have initiated vaginal sex. Half of 20 million new cases of STD’s account for adolescents ages 15-24 each year. Sexual Education being taught in school has shown that it is effective at assisting young people to make healthy decisions about sex. So my question is this, why is sexual education only mandatory in public schools in just 22 of the 50 states in the U.S when the argument shows it’s better to provide education? Research has shown that sexual education has a direct effect on the initiation of sex being delayed, the frequency of sex being reduced along with the number of sexual partners.
