Exploration: Slavery/ Sexism Among Women Years ago, we realized that slavery was not acceptable in result we decided to abolish it, or so we thought. As of today there are over thirty-six million slaves all over the world. About 48% of the enslaved are women and children and on average over 800,000 women and children are trafficked over international boarders each year (“Slavery is Everywhere.” Pg. 1). Female slaves can be sold for many purposes such as prostitution, marriage, and labor making the selling of slaves a thirty two billion dollar industry (“Sex Slavery/ Trafficking: Frequently Asked Questions.” Pg.1). Long ago in the 1850’s the first slave was sold for forty thousand dollars in South America. The price of a slave today is as low as ninety dollars it is said that a poor or rich man can own a slave in today’s world (“Slavery is Everywhere.” Pg. 1). Human trafficking can happen to anyone but, the cruelest type is considered to be the trafficking of women for sex. Soroptimist.org stated, “Human trafficking removes the victim from all that is familiar to her, rendering her completely isolated and alone, often unable to speak the language of her captors or fellow victims.” Human trafficking is illegal in almost every country, yet women and children are sold by their boyfriends, neighbors, and parents. Some are lured in with offers of a better life. A better life is the last phrase I would use to call this lifestyle here is why, women are expected to sleep with as many as thirty men a day. “Often, before serving clients, women are forcibly raped by the traffickers themselves, in order to initiate the cycle of abuse and degradation.” (“Sex Slavery/ Trafficking: Frequently Asked Questions.” Pg. 2).
