Sex surrogacy is seen as a highly controversial form of sex therapy. There have been claims made against it claiming that it is too similar to prostitution, and therefore should be considered illegitimate because it is perceived as being immoral. It has also been put into question because many think that the intimacy shared in this process can become problematic for those involved because they may develop feelings that can be damaging in the long run. Overall, I think that sex surrogacy is a questionable practice. I do not necessarily believe that it should be illegal, but I do not believe that it should be widely practiced either. It is difficult to say whether or not it should be used because it does seem to have positive outcomes for some. However, there are very clear reasons why this type of therapy would need serious regulation and training would have to be very strict and comprehensive for surrogates to maintain a healthy and positive relationship with the clients. There could be problems because the surrogate could be considered a person in power, which would make them having sex with clients inappropriate. There also needs to be a very controlled relationship with the surrogate and a therapist. While this is the case now, it still is difficult to monitor whether or not these two are interacting in a way that best suits the interests of the clients, without running into problems with confidentiality.
