By the time an individual enters adulthood, there is a journey involving the decline and rise in self-esteem. Self-esteem is often referred to as an individuals’ sense of worth and level of satisfaction with themselves. It is shown through a person’s actions and how they present themselves. It is often associated with notions such as self-image, how one perceives themselves based on other’s, self-concept, one’s views of themselves including elements such as height, weight, age, roles, and personality characteristics, and self-perception, one’s views of their individual characteristics and capabilities. Many challenges are met throughout different aspects of self-esteem, especially in American culture. Compared to other countries, The United States puts a societal pressure on the need for a high self-esteem (Arnett, 2007). The several challenges, causes, influences, and affects of self-esteem has led to vast amounts of research in self-esteem from preadolescence to adolescence and from adolescence into emerging adulthood.
Self-esteem from preadolescence (ages ten to thirteen) through adolescence (ages thirteen to nineteen) has more aspects other than just overall self-worth. According to Morris Rosenberg, scholar who developed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, there are two branches of adolescent self-esteem to take into consideration: baseline self-esteem and barometric self-esteem.
