First of all we have to understand this disease. According to Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D. The term "nervous breakdown" is sometimes used to describe a stressful situation in which someone becomes temporarily unable to function normally in day-to-day life. It's commonly understood to occur when life's demands become physically and emotionally overwhelming. The term was frequently used in the past to cover a variety of mental disorders, but it's used less often today. In this definition of nervousness it states that in the past it was used to generalize different mental disorders meaning that Mr. Nuttel not necessarily suffered from the nerves, but he may have had a mental disorder which caused him to be nervous. In "The Open Window" the main reason for Mr. Nuttel to become nervous and sprint out of the house like a crazy boy was that he thought the three figures of men that he was seeing were ghosts. Sappleton's four years ago and it is clear that she told her about Framton's mental disorder and fear for ghosts. If she would've not been told, Framton would've not gone there to get his disease treated. While Mrs. Sappleton is being told about this man's disease, little Vera (age 11 at the time) over hears it and unconsciously starts to make up stories about ghosts and similar ideas. For her surprise, 4 years later this man comes to their house to get treated, but as the majority of early teenagers, she sees every situation as joke or something not serious and decides to pull off a prank on him using her storytelling skills. From there on we all know the story and what happened. I find very impressive the way she elaborates the story and then her reaction while seeing the three men makes it appear real. It was extremely credible! While constructing the prequel to the story "The Open Window", we answered the questions made at the introduction which were: Why did Vera made up the stories? and How was she able this improvise such elaborated stories and make them credible?
Vera made up stories as a hobby because she was inspired by a storyteller at a young age, and she was able to make the credible and elaborated because it was a skill that she had practice for several
