Scout at the age of six and growing, can be seen as a product of her environment in many ways. First of all, her character is a result of the environment she subsides in and that environment can be described in many ways that are influencing to the character. The environment she is growing in is going through many phases like the Great Depression, racism against certain races, and discrimination. The influence of the people that are around her in the village and the school, causes Scout to make choices of saying things she does not fully understand. To begin with, the plot of the book has the term class which is how the community is made. In the community there are the people who are richer with a better employment and those that have very little incomes or none at all. The book describes three different classes that are based on their livings. The richer people of the community are the Finches whom Scout is a part of, then come the Cunningham’s who are the poorer people of the area, they live on what they have and nothing extra, and since they have no money they trade in other items like grown crops, lastly come the Ewell’s who are the poorest and they do not even live off a day on honest work, they are said to be more of animals than humans. These are the examples of different classes identified in the story. The Finches work hard and earn money to live a well-set life, the Cunningham’s must live on what they have and the Ewell’s live off of dishonest work. This is the separation between people in the community and the states they need or are forced to live in after determining the position they are at on the different classes. Secondly, the topic of race includes many branches in this book including racism and discrimination. Some of the words or allusions that are used in the text from chapter one to eight are Andrew Jackson who was the president of the United States from 1829-37, the disturbance between the North and the South which relates to the Civil War, the film Dracula which is about a vampire, Merlin who was King Arthur’s advisor and a wizard, the phrase “there was no money to buy it” which refers to the Great Depression, the Dewey Decimal System which is a system to organize books, the Union who was one of the sides in the Civil war, and the phrase “the crash” that represented the stock market crash that occurred before the Great Depression. All these allusions and phrases provided me with a sense of the setting and this helps the reader know that the time the story is placed in is when the Great Depression is occurring. Also, this helps me know that this book is set before the occurrence of World War 2.
