Scott Stossel is the author of this book and he has struggled with anxiety ever since he was a child. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV (DSM-IV) states that anxiety is a number of events or activities that occur more days or not, for at least six months, and also difficulty to control worrying, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension and sleep disturbance (Stossel, 2014, p. 49). In Stossel’s book, he uses his therapist definition of anxiety which is, “no one who has ever been tormented by prolonged bouts of anxiety…would deny how terribly painful the experience of anxiety can be. The experience of chronic or intense anxiety is above all else a profound and perplexing confrontation with pain” (Stossel, 2014, p. 50). The problem with anxiety is that it can hurt people who suffer from it with their day to day lives. People who suffer from anxiety tend to think the worst out of situations and tend to get nervous very easily. “1 in 7 Americans are suffering from some kind anxiety disorder at any given time” (Stossel, 2014, p. 8).
