There are over 2.2 million cases of people suffering nationally with the disease schizophrenia (NIMH, 2009). Schizophrenia usually begins in early adulthood the ages range from 15 to 25. The development of schizophrenia amongst genders differs. Men develop schizophrenia earlier than women and men become ill between the ages of 16 and 25 as opposed to women who start showing signs after the age of 30. The average age of onset is 18 in men and 25 in women. Recently researchers have theorized that schizophrenia is a result of a genetic predisposition attached to several environmental exposures and other stressors such as complications during pregnancy, delivery or childhood diseases which can trigger the mental disorder (Berger, 2010). Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that affects the mind and the brain while hindering the functionality of the consumer (Myers, 1998). Schizophrenia’s inability to function in society has a major impact on the families mentally and financially. The statistics estimate that 25% of consumers with schizophrenia are residing with family members (NAMI, 2006). Schizophrenia has become devastating to not only families but also society; the overall estimated cost is $62.7 billion. It remains the leading mental disorder that places many families in financial binds due to the cost associated with the medical treatment.
