Rushworth Kidder's List Of Ethical Values

Rushworth Kidder interviewed two dozen people from sixteen nations all for the Institute for Global Ethics. These interviews were done not to seek ethical failings in these nations, but to find the ethics that bind us all together. He asked a question to each person and documented what each said and compiled a list of their answers, that he found to be the most important. He found that there was a list of core values that stood out. He found values that would be agreed upon by all the interviewees, and some that were significant only to some. An argument can be made that Kidder’s interview with these two dozen people show a good example of ethical leadership. The core value that he listed such as tolerance, fairness, truthfulness, freedom, responsibility, and unity all represent what an ethical leader should possess and represent. Something that makes me think that he did indeed find the core ethical values, is that even random people like out class with no background in ethics can come up with similar core values in our lives. Looking back over some of the movies we’ve watched in class, this list reminds me of Twelve O’clock High. Ethics were brought when it came in that the squad had to go on yet another bombing raid, this time even lower in altitude. Was it ethical to put these men in that situation?
