Chapter Two: The Need for a Framework

Craig Pohlman introduces chapter two by emphasizing the need for educators to know their pedagogical theory and how it guides their instruction. One thing I knew prior to reading this chapter was the importance and need for a pedagogical theory to guide instruction. I believe this is an important part of our instructional practices and helps guide us as educators as we teach young minds. Additionally, Pohlman stresses the importance for psychologists to know the theoretical principals that guides their practice.

Pohlman identifies two scientific theories educators can use to help organize their theoretical framework. The first learning theory Pohlman discusses is positivism. The author states that “positivism is the school of thought that maintains the universe has a structure, and that the task of science is to understand that structure” (p. 19). Pohlman further explains that an individual who selects this theoretical framework, would view student data and learning as it relates to actual brain …show more content…
Pohlman states that “neuropsychologists have sought to map various mental abilities onto brain structures” (p. 22). One thing I was surprised to learn was how complex the neurodevelopmental framework was. According to the author, several interconnected areas makes up the neurodevelopmental framework which includes attention, memory, language, spatial ordering temporal-sequential ordering, neuromotor function, higher-order cognition, social cognition. Additionally, the neurodevelopmental framework includes several components that interact with the interconnected areas and include rate of processing and production, chunk size, metacognition, and strategy use. And finally, at the macro level, some of the interconnected areas can be divided into subcomponents which include mental energy control system, processing control system, and production control system. Prior to reading this chapter, I understood each individual area as it related to learning. After reading this chapter, I have a better understanding about how each area is
