Messiah/Christ: Messiah comes from the Hebrew word mashiah which is literally translated as “anointed with oil.” The act of a priest anointing something or someone transformed them from profane to sacred. The word christos (Christ) is an approximation of the word mashiah; it means “to smear, or rub.” Because Greek culture did not use anointing of oil as a way of making things sacred (they instead voted to elevate people to positions of power), they didn’t have a direct translation of the word mashiah.
