We wish for greatness and thanks to capitalism and our fore fathers we can achieve whatever we want instead of some low standards for menial pay and the betterment of communities. The new generation wants their slice of the pie and not a picture of it and some crumbs.
Vonnegut was a man who had fame, and money, and recognition for his work. These are all things he says we shouldn’t chase for in life. If he had followed his own advice he wouldn’t have any published works. If he wouldn’t have published those works he wouldn’t have nearly as much money and therefore wouldn’t have the security of comfort that comes from little financial worries. With his money came fame and recognition and along came more affluent people in his life. He talks about getting invited to a private party hosted by a billionaire. Life is tough for this guy. Kurt vonnegut may have been a brilliant guy when it came to writing books, however he was clearly living a pretty posh life with little struggle with what a young adult would be going through in their lives. He cared too much about what others thought of him. Seemingly out of touch when you properly looked at and is telling others to live a somewhat, meaningless life. He himself applies to none of the life advice he gave and to me, that seems just
