The respiratory system is the major system of organs that facilitates the process of respiration. This system controls a gas exchange which involves the distribution of oxygen throughout the body and the removal of carbon dioxide from the body as waste. In other words, it plays a crucial role along with the circulatory system during the action of breathing and maintains a constant supply of oxygen into the bloodstream. In turn, the respiratory system provides trillions of cells with energy from oxygen and ultimately plays a role in regulating blood volume and pressure. As the bronchi get further and further towards the lungs, it starts to form a bronchial tree as the larger bronchi branch into smaller bronchi. The tree goes from the primary bronchi, to the secondary bronchi, to the tertiary bronchi, and then finally to the bronchioles. At the end of these thin elastic bronchioles though, the vital exchange of gases takes place at little air sacs called alveoli. These alveoli fill with large amounts of air and through diffusion, oxygen is absorbed into tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Then, oxygen is carried by the protein hemoglobin in the red blood cells which, of course, makes its way back to the heart. The heart is linked to a system of veins and arteries that allow oxygen-rich blood to move throughout the body. While oxygen moves into the capillaries, red blood cells also collect carbon dioxide that needs to be expelled from the capillaries and back up through the respiratory tract for …show more content…
An example of this in the respiratory system would be asthma, which is the chronic inflammation of the lungs that causes airways to become restricted. This disease makes breathing very difficult since not enough air can get in and out of the lungs. Asthma produces repetitive periods of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. An asthma attack occurs when these symptoms are intensified or if more symptoms arise. When triggered by an allergic reaction, the immune system tries to help but only makes airways become swollen, tightened, and sensitive. These triggers can include chemicals, pollen, dust, and animal fur. Non-allergic triggers can include exercise, anxiety, stress, or even the weather. Asthma is most common in children and a person’s genetics play a huge role for those affected by it. There is no current cure for it as of now, but medication can be used to control symptoms and steps can be taken to avoid or control
