Real Sparta Vs. 300 Sparta
“THIS IS SPARTA”, a famous quote from the Hollywood movie 300 (2006), is this movie by Zack Snyder true to what really happen? Sparta was a city-state in south west of Ancient Greece with a strict set of eugenics. Sparta was one of the two biggest and strongest city-states and is considered to have the strongest Army of its time. Persia was the super power of its time, it had expanding borders due to conquering and Persia had it eyes on Greece. While in real life every last Spartan wears a plumed helmet, historians believe that the plumed helmet is worn to look taller and more intimidating. Frank Miller explains that he wanted King Leonidas to stand out from the other Spartans so that you can easily identify him in the group of other Spartans. In an addition to the wrong details in the movie 300 is that the right of passage. 300 right of passage was to stalk and kill a giant wolf. In real Sparta the right of passage was not to kill a wolf but to kill a slave. This was probably removed from the movie due to the fact that in the 300 Spartans did not have slaves and it is considered more awesome to kill a murderous beast than a defenseless human. Another mistake in the movie is that Xerxes was seven feet tall and bald. Though in real life the Persian king is much shorter and actual had a beard. We know this because Xerxes is often depicted in ancient art with a beard. Another mistake in 300 is that the portrayal of the Persian Immortals, the Persian elite, actually did not wear silver masks. In real ancient times the Immortals actually wore cloths around their faces and wore light body armor. Their are many more small details that the movie left out but if I would continue It would take way over one thousand words. A large mistake that the creators of 300 left out was who actually fought in the Battle of Thermopylae. In the movie the creators made
