In order to do so, the researchers used a sample of ninety eight women who had recently contacted a counseling unit voluntarily, aged from seventeen to sixty two, with a socioeconomic status rating from low to high-middle income range (Strube and Barbour, 1983). The violence endured by the victims ranged from moderate abuse, such as punching, kicking, and biting, to life threatening abuse, which included being knifed or shot with a gun (Strube and Barbour, 1983).
