Patience, love, and humility are important virtues in the sacred vow that is marriage. An absence of these virtues often leads to a destructive relationship between man and wife. Due to extensive abuse by their partner, there have been many instances in which victims of Battered Women Syndrome have assaulted and/or killed their abusers. Canadian criminal law recognizes Battered Women Syndrome as a defence for the crimes stated above. If one continues to be a part of an unhealthy relationship after recognition that violence is taking place the abuser may further manipulate them into thinking they are the reason for the abuse. The abuser might do this by saying to their partner that it was their last resort of punishment. The abuser often tells the victim they to are to blame for the abuse because they did not live up their expectations. Therefore, abusers utilize violence as a means of negative reinforcement to get their partner to behave a certain way. The victims of Battered Women Syndrome are so extensively manipulated by their abusers that they genuinely believe that they pose no guilt on their partner and for this reason victims with Battered Women Syndrome do not report that the abuse is taking place. “Be completely humble and gentle; Be patient, bearing with one another in love.
