By the 20th century, attitudes of rape in war have gone from something that is inevitable because men are deprived of female companionship for long periods of time to an actual tactic in conflict. The lasting psychological harm that rape inflicts on its victims is now being recognized: Rape is a form of torture it is cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment and/or punishment.
