While a limited budget exist, following proper laws and regulations impact the design of durable building. In regards to the laws, many new technologies have come out to make achieving durability easier. “There has never been a greater emphasis on building science and technology than there is today.” (www.eesi.org) The government has made compliance with laws a lot easier by providing funds for new technologies, as well as new science has made compliance with the laws less of a hassle. On the other hand these new technologies don’t allow for harmful buildings to pass inspection, which makes buildings more difficult to construct.. Building codes state that a house and its foundation “shall be substantially free from decay …show more content…
Past events, Rana Plaza Collapse and Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, have brought the public’s attention to safety issues within buildings. The public has supported consequences for those that put their employees at risk, especially when they knowingly participate in unethical practices. The Rana Plaza, in Bangladesh, recently collapsed due to structural issues in 2013. The engineer in charge “had been responsible for illegally adding four floors to the top of the building without any supporting walls.” (architizer.com) The overarching issue relies on the amount of times the engineer had the ability to redirect his unethical mistake, primarily because it resulted in 1,127 casualties. (ssir.org) Local officials in Bangladesh “arrested the engineer who’d called for the previous day’s evacuation,” because he allowed employees back into the building after structural concerns arose. Another famous building accident, The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911 also caused a “wave of reform.” (osha.gov) The factory failed to comply with the current safety laws and “the fire escape collapse under the weight of the fleeing workers.” (famous-trails.com) Many additional safety concerns were found and proven that if they were up to date then less workers would have passed away. As a result of the fire, new liability and worker …show more content…
The concept of utilitarianism administers to the sustainability of a building, because if the building has increased utility then using less building materials help the environment. Philosopher Sidgwick has insisted “that utilitarianism provides a standard of right action, not necessarily a decision procedure.” (plato.stanford.edu) Sidgwick supports the concept of creating multiple purposes out of items, even though legally one can create a single purpose building. The same logic may be used when discussing wage of workers: paying workers minimum wage follows all laws, yet morally it remains wrong to pay low wages. Another ancient philosopher, Jeremy Bentham believed in “the principle of utility.”(Bentham) Utilitarianism also relates to the principle of happiness. Bentham connects utilitarianism with motivation as motivation inspires people to do better for themselves and their community. Several additional ancient philosophers follow the ethics of utilitarianism as it relates to happiness and utility within many career
