They go to a summer intensive that lasts for a week. During this intensive, students stay in college dormitories and go to workshops on the campus to learn about financial aid, writing, and test prep. This summer intensive is the main basis for the participant’s junior and senior year. When they enter school, the seniors are put to work by applying for colleges, scholarships and financial aid while the juniors are introduced to their senior year and have workshops about FAFSA, requirements, and writing their personal statement. AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination is a global nonprofit organization that is dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing their students for college and other opportunities. Unlike 10,000 Degrees, AVID’s goal is to close the achievement gap between students, instead of closing the income gap. The program’s curriculum is to focus on reading, writing, critical thinking, and study skills. Data from AVID concludes that 78 percent of the participants in AVID during the 2013-2014 school year have been accepted into a college or university. 58 percent of that were Hispanic, while 15 percent were African Americans and the other 15 were White, the rest of that were the minority groups.
