Through rigorous instruction and positive character education, Aurum Preparatory Academy Charter School (“Aurum Prep”) educates all of its students, grades 6 – 8, to succeed in high school, college, and life and to serve as the next generation of moral leaders. All students deserve a quality education regardless of race, gender, socio-economic status, and/or zip code. In 1903, W.E.B. Dubois supported the idea of the “Talented Tenth,” articulating that advancement for black people would ultimately be possible through the attainment of a rigorous education by a few. In a more fully democratic country, in which we push for the advancement of all people, and in an intellectually-based modern economy, in which advanced education provides the fullest…
During my sophomore year as an undergraduate at the University of South Carolina, I was accepted into the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. I do not exaggerate when I say that this program changed the entire course of my life: helping me to fully understand my interests, altering my professional goals, and providing me with a viable path for my passions. As a first generation student, I had very little knowledge about how to navigate the sphere of undergraduate education and in the same vein, I knew next to nothing about graduate school. Before McNair I was never aware of what graduate school could offer me and the program, and the people it connected me with, became my greatest source of support as I made the journey into pursuing my doctorate.…

Even though most of these students coming to a two-year college will have to be placed into a remedial course to improve in the subjects that they are struggling in to bring them up to the college-level smartcard. Jenkins believes, “there’s nothing community colleges can do except help those students try to overcome their deficiencies. If they are willing to put in the time and effort, so are we” (“The…
I volunteered at Jack Jouett Middle School for the eighth-grade AVID program. In the classes, I helped students go through the AVID tutorial process. I functioned as a guide who coached the students through a Socratic process to understand points of confusion from their core classes, and then through collaborative work to understand the steps needed to clarify their point of confusion. All students in the AVID class apply to be in the program. They must have average to high test scores with a C to B+ grade point average.…
In the American society today, college has become a tradition. No matter the culture or ethnic background, it is deemed as the most practical method of succeeding in life. The importance of attending college is so evident that schools are now dedicating their time to preparing the students for the workload and content by the implementation of Advanced Placement classes. Furthermore, they create programs that are fixed towards encouraging students to increase their chances of getting accepted by participating in extracurricular activities and volunteering. Although some schools are not as equally resourceful and lack the necessary funds to provide students with the requisite circuitry to succeed in college, the pressure to attend in order…

Avid Scholarship Essay There's always certain people in life that tell you goals are important. They start asking why people set goals for themselves if they already know it's too hard or impossible to achieve. I always believed the same thing. I never thought goals were important till I started growing up and set some goals for myself.…
The racial gap in student academic achievement is once again the focus of much attention. “Educational expectations are lower for black children, according to Child Trends, a non-profit and non-partisan research center that tracks data about children.” (Cook, 2015) Black American has less opportunities and lack of support from their parents to succeed in the United States.…
According to the U.S Census, there are around 655,000 current African American high school seniors. Yet, when reading the statistics of the Ron Brown scholarship applicant pool, there were only 4,000 students who applied. These 4,000 merely makeup .006 percent of the black seniors in this country, and they shine a light on an area that the Ron Brown Scholar program needs to address. Today, the modern education system is tainted with bureaucratic and oligarchical tendencies that prevents students of color, and low socioeconomic backgrounds from excelling in this highly competitive field.…
The achievement gap has been a continuous issue for some time now, meaning every student isn’t receiving the same kind of education as one another. Many parents have tried hard to get their child the best quality of education money can but them, but it is not always guaranteed. The “hidden curriculum”, quality of educators, and charter schools are the ones to blame. Many would assume that every school is alike and teach the same curriculum, but Jean Anyon has proved otherwise. In ‘Social Class and the Hidden Curriculum of Work’, Anyon went to different socially ranking schools such as the “working class” school and even as high as “executive elite”.…
Equal opportunity in education is as realistic in America as it is to lick your own elbow or fitting your whole fist in your mouth. Equal opportunity in education is the prevention of any discriminatory acts against students, staff and faculty; however, in Mike Rose’s, “I Just Wanna Be Average”, he argues that the educational system is completely unjust for those in a lower program and that those that are in those lower education programs are not being challenged to their full potential. Rose brings up many important points in his study about the educational system, but fails to mention other factors that could cause a student to not reach their true potential. These factors, such as race and social class, nowadays, contribute greatly in the…
American Promise (2013) tells the story of Idris and Seun, who are both African American boys. Both boys started out at the same school, but embark on different paths in life. Both Idris and Seun had been accepted into Dalton, which is a highly prestigious and almost exclusively white school, where a multitude of students go on to Ivy League colleges. Dalton is a school in the upper east side of Manhattan with exceedingly high standards and expectations of their students.…

The process of attaining a college degree challenges an individual in many different ways, but those among a 1st generation population are often overlooked. 1st generation college students are the first in their family to attend college and come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We wanted to take upon this topic to expose many of the disadvantages and challenges that 1st generation college students are faced with at the 4-year university level, particularly at Cal State Los Angeles; considering the demographic of 1st generation students consists of 60% admitted freshman. Cal State LA is also one of the more diverse institutions with 89% people of color and 11% white. While our admission rates are typically high, our graduation rates entail…
