Like Oil and Water Racism should not be tolerable because it has negative effects on society. In the fictional story, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Scout to showcase the racial disparities in Maycomb society. A non-fictional source that displays discrimination is the Memoir Montgomery Boycott by Coretta Scott King, it mentions about how black people were not given the same rights as white people on buses. Another non-fictional source is the article White People Are Fine with Laws That Harm Blacks by Jamelle Bouie, it reveals that statistics prove white people generally believe that black people are associated with crime. There are two solutions to racial discrimination that affects a person’s life, one is to tolerate them the other is to silence them. In this scene, Atticus has to announce the death of Tom Robinson, who was shot trying to escape from prison. “I guess Tom was tired of white men’s chances and preferred to take his own.” (Lee 315). Atticus tells Aunt Alexandra, Calpurnia, Miss Maudie and Scout that while Tom was in Jail, he decided to take his chances and escape. Tom Robinson was put into this situation due to the white juries who voted him guilty based on his skin color. This influences Tom’s decision to escape prison because he rather take his chance on escaping than to be in a white man’s justice system. Furthermore his decision based on racial discrimination heavily affected his life expectancy. In addition to TKAM, Tolerance also demonstrates the effects of discrimination. Forster describes how there are many different people living in the world today and talks about how to deal with them, he says “There are two solutions. One of them is the Nazi solution. If you don’t like people kill them…. The other way is much less thrilling… If you don’t like people, put up with them as well as you can” (Forster 75). By saying that “you should kill them” as a solution to racial discrimination shows us how far people are willing to go to deal with people who are different. Superiority makes people believe that they are born with benefits that justify themselves being better than others. After Boo Radley stabbed his father in the leg with a pair of scissors, boo is not restrained in the jail instead he is locked in the courthouse basement since “The sheriff hadn’t the heart to put him in jail alongside Negroes” (Lee 11). The sheriff was trying to protect Boo because he thought it would have been a grueling punishment had he put him alongside the Negroes. This leads to White superiority because it implies that the sheriff thinks that Boo Radley, a white person, should not share the same cell with blacks. In addition Memoir Montgomery Boycott displays the same effect of racism, In Montgomery City Bus Lines the northern-owned corporation treated their black passengers like cattle “The first seats on all buses were reserved for whites. Even if they were unoccupied and the rear seats crowded” (King 45). This treatment towards black people show how superior white people feel. They feel that they deserve to have the first seats just because they were born white. Due to this way of thinking it is shown in both TKAM and Memoir Montgomery Boycott that white people believe they are better than black people which results in them segregating
