Like Oil and Water Racism should not be tolerable because it has negative effects on society. In the fictional story, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Scout to showcase the racial disparities in Maycomb society. A non-fictional source that displays discrimination is the Memoir Montgomery Boycott by Coretta Scott King, it mentions about how black people were not given the same rights as white people on buses. Another non-fictional source is the article White People Are Fine with Laws That Harm Blacks by Jamelle Bouie, it reveals that statistics prove white people generally believe that black people are associated with crime. Lastly, Tolerance by E.M. Forster, is an article, that explains that the solution to racial discrimination is to tolerate their actions before jumping to conclusions. The effects of racial discrimination as seen by both non-fictional and fictional text is that it leads to unfair treatment, changes in people’s lives, and white supremacy. Racial discrimination causes individuals to be in danger of being treated unfairly. When faced with the truth, racists will always abide with racial stereotypes. During Tom’s trial, Jem believes that Atticus will prove Tom did not rape Mayella, but Reverend Sykes says “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man “(Lee 279).
