Modern day racism is no different than the racism being faced by the Freedom Writers. People of all different ethnic backgrounds and races are faced with stereotyping, unfair disadvantages, and the hatred that comes from the ignorance of others. People still tend to associate with, and defend “their own kind,” while pointing fingers at, and assigning blame to, people that are different than them. In cases of stereotyping, people will consider characteristics of one person from a certain ethnic background, and automatically assume that everyone of that race or ethnicity has those same characteristics. For example, people who think all muslims are terrorists, or all mexicans sell illegal drugs, are simply uneducated and obtuse. The saddest part about this, however, is that a lot of these stereotypes seem to stick, leaving completely innocent people with a bad reputation. Enough is enough. It is 2016, and people need to start seeing people for who they are, not what they look like or where they come from.
