He emits a sense of surrealism and daunting sadness. When you gaze into his eyes, you are looking into the eyes of a man who has seen Hell. There are moments when he looks as though he is about to begin screaming at any second, and never stop. His mannerisms and lumbering speech is indicative of the torment he has gone through after 19 years on death row that has hardened his sense of compassion; depriving him of the interaction human beings are built on. He and I both suffer from an unrealistic expectation of how everyone should treat one another - how one simple act done on impulse, could cause serious grief. I have a hard time expressing my thoughts without feeling some sort of pressure that the words falling out of my mouth are even worth the time to express, and whether what I say has any real impact on anyone’s life, even my own. Daniel falls victim to his verbal shortcomings when he is faced with certain dilemmas over the course of his release; such as facing the mother of the victim. This was ultimately the choice to dwindle in the past or to move on to new beginnings, a constant struggle many deal with on a daily basis. It becomes apparent that new beginnings are simply unrealistic without tying the ends from the past. Daniel sat up from his pillow every morning at the respective time and sat down at the head of his thin mattress, practicing the exact same methodology every day for 19 years of his life. How would you feel to miss out on a quarter of your existence? I pace around my own room and could never imagine being accustomed to staying in the same space for 19 years without being able to interact with another human being face to face. Without the warm touch of another person’s hand in mine, or without the knowledge of what is going on in the outside world – Who won the world cup? Are the UK still in the EU? These most simple questions, become nothing but a laughable prospect. Most view prisoners as monsters. I prefer to view death row inmates as leafless trees; left bare to show to the world that they have done an unforgivable deed. But aren 't leafless trees basically just nature 's skeletons? A rotting corpse waiting for the day they will be chopped down and replaced by another. Perhaps, death row is nothing but a glorified torture
