Objective:
Assess disparities in health insurance coverage by controlling for individual’s race/ethnicity, insurance status as well as income.
Background:
Despite recent health reform efforts, the inability to acquire appropriate health insurance coverage remains to be a prevalent issue in the United States. BRFSS is a telephone survey supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that collects data from U.S. citizens regarding health related behaviors.3 This study will examine data compiled by landline and cellphone surveys for 455,065 participants from the 50 states, District of Columbia, as well as three other U.S. territories.
In order to determine dependency, this study controlled for race/ethnicity, insurance status, as well as income. Race and ethnicity was characterized by non-Hispanic white; non-Hispanic black; other race; multiracial, and Hispanic. Insurance status was then described to capture those who either did or did not have health insurance at the time the survey was taken. Additionally, income was arranged into seven different categories.
Results:
A chi square test of independence indicates that there is statistically significant evidence that health insurance coverage depends on social factors such as race and ethnicity as well as socioeconomic measures such as income (p <
