Research methods are the most important part of social science research and it is widely used in various other studies, particularly in the business research. Clifford Woody made a definition: “research comprises defining and redefining problems, formulating hypothesis or suggested solutions; collecting, organizing and evaluating data; making deductions and reaching conclusions; and at last carefully testing the conclusions to determine whether they fit the formulating hypothesis”. In the real life, there are many questions need to be solved and proved, thus, it is necessary to find a scientific way to collect data for research.According to the data required for answering the research question, research methods could be divided into two types: quantitative and qualitative. To some extent, qualitative methods have become a more important tools to business research rather than quantitative methods, because they can provide in-depth research results.
Interview, questionnaire and case study are three basic research methodology in qualitative research. This paper is divided into three main sections and it will illustrate the meaning, underlying philosophy and example of the application of these three research methods in the context of accounting and finance in each section separately.
