On September 19th Masha Gessen an esteemed Russian-American journalist gave a lecture on the many similarities between Presidents Donald trump and Vladimir Putin. Gessen started off by pointing out several obvious similarities between the two men since she has personally experienced the effects of both leaders. To demonstrate their similarities Gessen list the fact that these two powerful rulers both lie without remorse or fear of the consequences, take advantage of the media, and are incurious men who only have interest, not priorities. It is surprising to see how alike these two rulers are and is shocking that this controversy didn’t play a role in the election until it was too late. The issue of the Cold War is the first concept to come to mind. The main connection is the tension that has been created between the two countries once again. As well as, the promotion and news of nuclear weapons and the issues of immigrants. Both men view the world as a battleground and see themselves as indestructible and both use deportation and immigration as a political weapon. Since the election, we now see one another as a threat, and now that congress has accused Russia of alleged hacking us we have ended hope of a relationship. All of these issues also occurred during the cold war in different forms. Additionally, both men have disdain for government and moral authority. The truly sad part is that they are fully aware of the enormous cost this behavior has on us. Nevertheless, after Gessen's lecture I came to realize that with all the similarities the two men have, they also share differences such as the fact that both men have thoughts and concerns about globalization. During Donald Trump’s campaign, he made it clear that he desires a mass retreat from globalization. He often creates issues with other countries, offends cultures, doesn’t always agree with trade over certain borders, and is very much against immigration. Whereas, I came to the conclusion that Putin wants to refine globalization under his own terms to benefit his own country and welcomes immigrants with strict
