Creative Economy Vs Purpose Economy Essay

Purpose Economy vs. Creative Economy Aaron Hurst describes the fourth economic stage as the purpose economy (following the knowledge economy). As humans, we have a fear of not mattering. Because of this, Hurst predicts our next economic era will be centered around our individual quest for purpose. Each of the previous economies have made mankind ‘faster, stronger, smarter,’ but now mankind is turning back to a more ‘human’ way of doing things. Purpose is a choice, according to Hurst, which everyone can obtain in their jobs if they wish to. They do not need a cause, a huge revelation, or have certain luxuries to be able to find purpose for themselves. Hurst believes a purpose economy could be the next era our culture is moving towards. Richard Florida has a different perspective. Florida believes a creative economy is where our culture is heading next. As he says in the video Why Creativity is the New Economy, creativity builds new technologies, goods, and ways of living. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Hurst talk about the purpose economy. I think it is incredibly different than what we have seen in the past, which intrigues me. The three ways of looking at work (job, career, calling) was mind opening. I have never thought about work in this way, but I can see how finding a calling and purpose could lead to a more fulfilled life. Although Florida makes multiple points in describing the creative economy, I feel as if more people would relate to the purpose economy. Also, Florida mostly just states ‘everyone has creativity.’ In contrast, Hurst states how exactly to generate purpose and how to even find purpose. Hurst gave clear examples of a purpose economy while Florida’s examples were not as straight forward or relevant to
