The performing arts offer students the opportunities to use different kinds of creative abilities. Chapter 8 discusses the importance of integrating art into the other subject areas in order to provide students with enriching opportunities. Arts help promote esteem, develop empathy, and provide equity. Providing students to work with arts will allow students to actively engage in the material and deepen their connections while learning about other subjects. Chapter 8 discusses the importance of allowing students to express themselves.…
Yet literacy rates before then, before compulsory public schooling, are estimated to be around 90% to 98%. Men such as Abraham Lincoln, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain), and Frederick Douglass were able to educate themselves and move on to contribute greatly to society without the benefit of public education in any form, as did most Americans in that era(Sowell, Inside 18-24,27). In fact, in many countries today, countries such as Switzerland, where it is estimated that only 23% of its citizens attend public high school, have the highest income per capita in the world and more scholarly individuals in comparison to other countries. This is generally attributed to the lack of public education (Murray Real 33,34). The same show similar literacy rates to that of early America, where little was available in the way of public…
Music, Drama and Art in the Hallways (An Argument Concerning the Validity of Arts in Schools) School is supposed to be a place of learning and enrichment, but it doesn’t take long for the students to become uninterested with the same boring lessons that are pulled out of dusty textbooks. From calculus quizzes to English exams, the material learned isn’t always the most interesting, to say the least. There is a way to make learning a bit more bearable and school a pinch more pleasant. For many students, the answer comes in the form of fine arts classes.…
School systems should not require students to take a Fine Arts class so students can focus on more relevant courses to their education and career goals, more in tuned with students skills and abilities and be more convenient to students’ schedules. For instance, there are actually some students who feel as if Fine Arts classes aren’t needed in school while they are trying to obtain a “real” education. As far as real education goes, they are referring to classes that they will take knowledge from and use outside of the walls of school. For example, it is more beneficial to a student’s future career path to excel in math or science courses in comparison to band.…
One of the main first world struggles of this decade is the cost of a higher education. The cost for college tuitions is quickly rising every year, therefore, people are less likely to strive for college due to cost. Unfortunately ordinary mundane jobs like McDonald’s or Pizza Hut are starting to requiring college education for more high paying positions. Even so, college enrollments are dropping 69% to 66% in 2008-2013 ( JP. “What are the odds of succeeding with a college degree?”).…
Almost every person in America is into some aspect of the arts. Even if you don’t believe you are, just look at one of your favorite TV shows. They are actors and actresses who are performing, which is an art. Music is one of the most common, as we now have radio, CDs, and the Internet. We have already murdered the arts at school, so why are we trying to do it out of school too?…
Public education in the southeastern United States faces a variety of issues as it winds down the first quarter of the 21st century. No issue is perhaps more daunting than the decreasing levels of state funding provided to public education over the last several years. This trend is highly prevalent in the southeast and shows no signs of turning course. Per the U.S. Census Bureau, from 2008-2014, the level of state funding in K-12 public education decreased 5.37% in all eleven southeastern states. K-12 schools rely heavily on state aid to fund their operations.…
“School can bind as effectively as it can liberate; it can enforce conformity and limit life chances as well as foster individual talent” (Colombo, 107). I attended DuBois Area High School, which is a public high school in a middle class town. There was about 1200 students in my school so I knew a lot of people but I would see new faces almost every day.…
The purpose of public education should be to give students a free and equal education. While I do believe that public education provides an abundant education for some, I also believe it hinders and holds back others. Public education gives students a free and unequal education. Inner-city students attend public schools where they lack books and engaged teachers. They are expected to learn without the necessary resources.…
Since when have little kids have to be in a lottery to go to a good school? Philip Davis Guggenheim, an American film and television director and producer, illustrates in his documentary the various problems that we have in our public education system. One of the problems Guggenheim discusses in his film is that people from lower-income neighborhoods don't have the same education as well as upper class due to school funding. Schools in low-income neighborhoods are more disadvantage than schools in rich communities because they receive better quality materials, better teachers, more money from the state, and the tax money received from the citizens who live in those communities. In the film they called these disadvantage schools “drop out factories”.…
We are in the dark ages of learning. There is an insufficient focus on creativity in school. Integrating more arts into the education system would aid students in feeling more involved in their education, It should be made mandatory that students choose at least two. There must be a balance of all subjects so that they are less likely to become disinterested. We are all being taught to think identical instead of thinking differently, or at least we are all taught the same.…
Janet Napolitano once said, “Public Schools were designed as the great equalizers of our society-the place where all children could have access to educational opportunities to make something of them selves in adult hood.” This belief still stays true today, as public schools prepare students for the next step in life. The first public school system was founded 1635, in Boston, after realizing teaching students to read and write at home and in church was insufficient. Attending a public high school allows for strong community connection, gives freedom to choose religious beliefs, and benefits from public funding, which overall prepares students for college. Having a strong community connection not only helps outside of school, but also is…
Going to school and education have always been exceedingly important to me, from the very beginning. Over time, I have come to love education for myself, and appreciate the many doors it opens for a stable future. So, it has always been troubling to me when I come across students of my own age and race- who don’t share that same appreciation. Of course, people aren’t always going to enjoy the mind crashing labor that comes with school- but I figured that there would at least be some level of regard for public education- especially in a school like TC Williams.…
Teachers may not feel that there is enough time in the day to do both, but as illustrated above, there are fun, easy, cost-effective ways to make sure that educators can make the best of their time with their students. Teachers should not be afraid to use drama and music to further their lessons and get their information to their students. In order to do this, teachers require a supportive administration to help them with this task, should they choose to try and implement fine arts into their kindergarten through second…
Schools have a better chance in getting higher test scores if they are able to support and acknowledge the importance of Visual and Performing Arts classes. The arts provide opportunities to explore and interpret and react to a world that can seem cruel and distant and complicated. Parents should not control what their children should spend their time doing, but rather support them in whatever they choose to enjoy. Schools should fully fund art education because it is not a waste of money or time; art education helps children who are at risk of dropping out of school. For a student being able to express themselves freely gives a more positive learning environment and a chance to view ideas in a different perspective.…
