Outstandingly, music that is deemed vulgar for children is censored. Some places, like Wal-Mart, will only sell albums if they have a content advisory (Knoploh). This is to protect the innocence of children, supposedly. I think it is a way to control yet another aspect of our lives. The people who started the campaign of censoring were the president’s wife and her higher up friends (Prabhakar). If it was that much of a problem, why didn’t they control what their own children were listening too. People of the United States suffered as a whole because of this attempt on freedom of speech. Almost every person in America is into some aspect of the arts. Even if you don’t believe you are, just look at one of your favorite TV shows. They are actors and actresses who are performing, which is an art. Music is one of the most common, as we now have radio, CDs, and the Internet. We have already murdered the arts at school, so why are we trying to do it out of school too? When we destroy the arts, what will entertain us? It is scientifically proven that music, rock and rap included, is helpful when used in a learning environment (Knoploh). Censoring that freedom of expression is hazardous to the arts. Sparks will eventually stop flying. People will snuff out their talents. That is the price of censoring people. You become like the communistic countries such as North Korea. These types of countries use it as a way to control their people. Slowly, the United States is becoming exactly this way. We have so much hope and talent, so what if they swear a little? Or talk about sex? These are things that sadly, my generation loves to talk about. An example of censoring art, not even music in this instance, is a professor getting charged criminally for naked paintings. His students were told in the beginning that they would have to pose nude as the final exam. However, one girl felt uncomfortable, even though she knew it was going to happen. How long have we had nude art? Thousands upon thousands of years of art, even in BC times, yet here we are, trying to censor that just because it can actually have an effect on people.
