Her addictions have caused her many problems and made her life even more difficult. Reading all of her problems caused by her substance abuse, it has made me more aware of the consequences associated with addictions. I learnt that substance abuse or an addiction causes not only physical affects to an individual, but it also creates substantial mental and emotional problems as well. Prior to reading Sharon’s book, I always thought that addictions would have a stronger influence on the individual’s physical aspects. I did not consider that an individual’s addiction could harm his/her family, children, friends, and many other aspects as well. Sharon has displayed that her addiction has caused her harms to more aspects than just the physical aspect. Her story has taught me that if I come across anyone that has an addiction in my future career in social work, I should take into consideration of all the different harms and hardships that they are going through. Addictions have many negative consequences and it is important to deal with them in a sensitive way. These people have gone through a lot in their life and the last thing they need is for someone to remind them of the bad choices they have made. Prior to when Sharon started participating in Ceremony, she knew very little about her culture. She started learning the basics to her culture at an older age than average. The Sweat Lodge has the power to attract people with very little traditional knowledge and teach them deeper meanings about their culture (Hall, 1985). In addition, it also has the tendency to attract people with distinct tribal knowledge about their culture (Hall, 1985). Sweat lodges also illustrate the persistence of active Native American healing practices (Hall, 1985). The Sweat Lodge plays a huge role in teaching Aboriginal individuals about their culture. Earlier in Sharon’s life she did not have the education on her own culture or even have the motivation to learn about her own culture.
