Do They Understand? Majority of people around the world have heard of the word terrorism, but do they truly know what it means and the history behind the word? According to Merriam-Webster, terrorism is violent acts to frighten people in an area as a way of trying to achieve a political goal (Merriam-Webster.), but this only scratches the surface of this powerful and dark word. Contrary to common belief, terrorism is not an act that has just started, but an intense act that has been raging for centuries. Throughout history there have been many violent acts towards people’s beliefs and the best example for that would be the Jews and Arab Muslims (Donohoe Pg.10).This violent feud dates back to biblical times. Another major reason for terrorism is territorial disputes and the most prominent example would be al-Qaeda. Political conflict is another cause for terrorism. Political conflicts include distrust of the government, moral beliefs, animal protection, abortion, and many more. The media has made it easier to attack and get the fame that terrorist want (Simonsen and Spindlove Pg.15). There are even factions of the Arab world who are fighting each other. The new terror threat facing our world today is the ISIS. Each day, new reports are in the news updating general public on the expanse and fear being caused. In 1995, Timothy McVeigh killed 168 people and injured more than 500 when he attacked a Federal Building in Oklahoma City (Donohoe). Eric Rudolph Church is known for being the worst anti-abortion terrorist in the U.S.; he led many bombing attempts in the south. Most notably he led attacks on an abortion clinic in Birmingham, Alabama and the bomb attack at Centennial Park in Atlanta Georgia during the 1996 Olympics. There have been so many more attacks on American soil and overseas some include female suicide bombers who killed 18 people in Moscow, a gas attack in Tokyo that killed 12 and injured more than 5,000, and a car bomb in Bali that killed over 200 people.It is not just foreign-terrorist committing these acts violence. In Columbine, CO, Pearl, MS and Sandy Hook, CT several innocent lives were so abruptly, so tragically and so young when they were gunned down by people they knew. Does anybody truly understand the depth of terrorism? No definition can hold sum up the magnitude of the word terrorism. Terrorism is just a word, but the meaning behind it reveals the long, shocking history, the strange and dangerous causes, and the severe attacks that have killed and injured millions.
