What is the nature of the debate over CCSS – What are the key positions and who takes them?
Politics and education have been intertwined since the establishment of education. Accordingly, it is no surprise that, CCSS became politically embroiled as a contemporary centerpiece document. Objectively speaking, Common Core State Standards can be defined as educational standards for both Math and English literature for K-12 students. But in addition to these objective standards, Common Core has become an antipathy for many things wrong in education. Research across the political spectrum and from various educational organizations reveals the widespread angst, with political deadlocks, proclaimed counter actions, wild accusations, and untruths about CCSS goals. There is significant evidence to support this claim found in various articles and examples of what an actual standard is. This connects to the argument that the debate and standards have been oppressed by many through the media, with the core elements being encapsulated with other issues wrong with education. Some of the other important issues in the endless debate include curriculum, funding (lack of funding or removal) by political combatants, and so called achievement gaps. One notion a non-expert has to consider is the relevance of an argument that Common Core was a plot to destroy public schools. Was CCSS a perceived plot by American’ conservatives or liberals to destroy our public schools; or a reality that the standards were developed behind closed doors by powerful like Bill Gates (Rycik) (Rycik, Support Continues to Erode for Common Core Standards and Assessments) A positive piece of evidence used can be illustrated through the history of CCSS’s creation. Travel through time from 1892 which illustrates how the “Committee of Ten” attempted to initiate high school standards, and also sought to align high schools and college. (KappaGammaBulletin) This shows that these are just a few general items spread widely across the public scope to muddy the Common Core debates.
