Register to read the introduction… A synthesised version of Ascorbic acid is known to be added to food and drinks, because storage of food alone is known to lead to the loss of the natural vitamin C before consumption, not forgetting when food is cooked or heated this also leads to a loss of the nutrient. Processed foods are prepared with this synthetic form and marketed for sale, allowing us humans to ingest the antioxidants normally found within natural vitamin C (Fit day, 2013). This information suggests that when scurvy develops nowadays, there are more than likely other contributing factors to the disease, such as a dependency on alcohol or drugs, for example smoking. Smoking is acknowledged to reduce the amount of vitamin C absorbed by the body, therefore the amount of vitamin C intake needed to keep scurvy or its symptoms at bay increases. Being pregnant or breast feeding also increases the body’s need for vitamin C because of the mum effectively sharing her nutrients with the baby. Also medical conditions that affect people’s ability to digest food such as Crohns disease or Ulcerative Colitis may also add to a persons’ susceptibility of vitamin c deficiency (NHS, 2013 …show more content…
