My Pre-Clinical Reflection

Pre-clinical reflection:
What is my goal for learning today? My goal for the clinical day was to maintain a therapeutic conversation with the client that I am paired with. I want to allow this individual to communicate the information that he desires without pushing him into a topic or area that he does not wish to discuss. I do want to ask questions so the client can get personal about the past and future. I want to listen closely to what the clients says and respond in a therapeutic way the fits the situation. This conversation should be focused primarily on the client.
What commitment do I make to engage in learning to meet my goal(s)? The commitment I made was to be nonjudgmental of any information that the patient provided. Maintain

At times, it’s hard to communicate with individuals without judging them for their past. Since reading the chart was done in the second half of the clinical day it allowed me to be open to communication and focused on the patient’s health and progress today. I believe that this is important because I never want anyone to feel judged or look down upon because everyone is human. From the patient’s past, I also saw that he was sexually and physically abused by his biologic parents and when reflecting on the situation it causes me to believe that his childhood contributed to his actions and mental health later in life. In situations such as these I begin to feel empathetic for people and it causes me to get emotional knowing the negative experiences that some individuals were forced to experience in their life. I am not sure how these emotions would have been shown in in conversation if I would have looked at the chart from the beginning. I believe that I may have had more trouble making conversion because I would want to avoid or bring up certain …show more content…
When the client gave a lot of information about a particular topic when he was done talking I made sure to paraphrase the information that was said. I believe that this was effective because it allowed him to know that I was paying attention and cared about what was being communicated. I believe that it contributed to his willingness to continue to share his beliefs and feelings. I also primarily asked open-ended questions. This technique was effective because it allowed the client as much information as he wished to. It also allowed the conversation to flow better because we were not forced to fish for information to discuss. Instead we spent an extensive amount of time discussing a few different topics. Effective pauses were also used throughout the conversation and I would also consider this technique effective. I believe that it allowed the client to reflect on his thoughts and decide if there was anything else within or outside of a topic that he wanted to share. Effective pauses also allowed me to do the same so although they were sometimes awkward the pauses were

Delivering the highest quality of care of our patient is the ultimate goal of every nurse in this profession. Effective nurse-patient communication and the whole health team are essential in ensuring that this goal being met. (Paget, L., Han, P., Nedza, S., Kurtz, P., Racine, E., Russell, S., Santa, J., Schumann, M., Simha, J. and Von Kohorn, I. 2011, June). I started this class having only taken two other classes in the counseling program. Although I enjoyed those classes, they did not discuss what you actually do in a therapy session with a client. I felt I was still missing the knowledge of how a therapy session actually worked. This class has taught me many things that have allowed me to become more comfortable with what therapy is and how it works. Whether it was picking out patterns or even practical things, the topics addressed in this class have helped me to grow and change as a therapist as well as help me integrate my faith with the therapy process.…

The client reported that she feels happy as her aunt is pregnant and she would like to have a boy while the client would like her to have a girl. My observer noticed the awkwardness and how there was silence and I realized one of the main reasons for those awkward silences was because my main focus was to try and remember word for word what our client has said rather than genuinely listening to what the client had to say. Additionally, I believe that in order to become a “good” counsellor it should come in a natural way like how one of Roger’s guide to counselling is genuineness and how I shouldn’t be thinking of what comes next like “Should I say an open or closed question next?” or “Did I paraphrase?” or “Am I positioned correctly to be facing my client?” I believe all these things should be a natural thing you do when you are a counsellor and your main focus should be to help your client and advise…

In the past two week, I was on the surgery ward having an 8 days clinical dietitian placement in the Frankston hospital, learning how to communicate with various groups of patients. For the early stages of my placement, I mainly learned to read the medical record and observed my supervisor to do the nutrient assessment and gave my feedback or comments to my supervisor. The critical incident occurred in the second week of my placement, which I went to do a short interview with the patient on my own. This was my first time and I needed to do the full assessment and the dietary history in this interview.…

The first skill that was used to engage my client was using an open ended question at the beginning of my interview. According to Hohman (2002), “open-ended questions are those that have a variety of possible answers and do not limit the client” (p.20) using this strategy allows the client to explore his own thoughts and it encourages the client to do most of the talking. I started my conversation with my client by asking a simple open question for example “how was his day going ?” later I saw myself asking deeper questions such as “You mention that your brother is an alcoholic, how is your relationship with your brother?” this allowed me to listen to my client story in his own words and to keep the interviewing flowing.…

Use of these questions also had a part to play in improving our relationship since he saw some genuine interest and care on my part to be able to take my time to listen to his problems without any interruptions (Mike, 2008). The second stage basically involved my reflections and attitudes of my client’s feelings. I involved both theoretical and my own ideas in building the relationship with my client in order to reach into a consensus and be able to provide a solution to the problem at…
