What is my goal for learning today? My goal for the clinical day was to maintain a therapeutic conversation with the client that I am paired with. I want to allow this individual to communicate the information that he desires without pushing him into a topic or area that he does not wish to discuss. I do want to ask questions so the client can get personal about the past and future. I want to listen closely to what the clients says and respond in a therapeutic way the fits the situation. This conversation should be focused primarily on the client.

At times, it’s hard to communicate with individuals without judging them for their past. Since reading the chart was done in the second half of the clinical day it allowed me to be open to communication and focused on the patient’s health and progress today. I believe that this is important because I never want anyone to feel judged or look down upon because everyone is human. From the patient’s past, I also saw that he was sexually and physically abused by his biologic parents and when reflecting on the situation it causes me to believe that his childhood contributed to his actions and mental health later in life. In situations such as these I begin to feel empathetic for people and it causes me to get emotional knowing the negative experiences that some individuals were forced to experience in their life. I am not sure how these emotions would have been shown in in conversation if I would have looked at the chart from the beginning. When the client gave a lot of information about a particular topic when he was done talking I made sure to paraphrase the information that was said. I believe that this was effective because it allowed him to know that I was paying attention and cared about what was being communicated. I believe that it contributed to his willingness to continue to share his beliefs and feelings. I also primarily asked open-ended questions. This technique was effective because it allowed the client as much information as he wished to. It also allowed the conversation to flow better because we were not forced to fish for information to discuss. Instead we spent an extensive amount of time discussing a few different topics. Effective pauses were also used throughout the conversation and I would also consider this technique effective. I believe that it allowed the client to reflect on his thoughts and decide if there was anything else within or outside of a topic that he wanted to share. Effective pauses also allowed me to do the same so although they were sometimes awkward the pauses were
