Yesterday in clinical I was on the labor and delivery unit. As everyone know, mom and baby is not my preference. Since researching this topic, my nursing practice has changed in the way that I interview, assess, and treat my clients. Throughout my education in nursing school I was always taught a more holistic approach, however I was never truly conducting my assessments and interviews with clients within this matter. I am always respectable and caring towards clients, but in my past practices within clinical, my focus was primarily on the disease process and preventing the disease from worsening. Within this semester I have improved my practice, with the help of this research, to not only treat the disease process, but to use the same focus as CAM and treat the person as a whole. My day started off with meeting the two individuals I would be spending most of my day with which was Kat and Will who were both paramedics. Kat took me to the ambulance and showed me the things we would need in each case that we would go to and no matter what the case was the two things they would need is the medicine bag and the stretcher. Then we went through the ambulance and she showed me where most of the equipment was and the medications. This week’s bible passage made me reflect on my clinical rotation at the clinic while shadowing a nurse who was doing an anatomical procedure to an offender who accidentally fell and injured his head. Anatomical is the procedure that any nurse will do before they will assign any offender to segregated or isolated locked rooms or to any offender who needs to be assessed after an event that resulted in an injury. Being a hands-on learner, I excelled the most in lab. I was always delighted to go in and learn how to do all the different procedures and acquire new skills that we would perform in the clinical setting. Teamwork and collaboration, good communication, and confidence are the three strengths I believe I demonstrated during this rotation.
