Positive thinking is an extremely powerful force, one that can cause a ripple effect which can not only help an individual generate solutions and success but a whole organization. Take for example a recent article published online and on a local Baltimore TV station. Marsha, a 39 year old woman, battling stage II cancer had began chemotherapy and was feeling the negative emotions from the journey of treatment she knew lay ahead. Research by Barbara Fredrickson, a psychology professor who has written at length on the subject of positivity, found that those who think positive thoughts have a greater capacity to take on new information. “Thinking more positively does not just change the contents of the mind, trading bad thoughts to good; it changes the boundaries of the mind and in that process it widens the span of possibilities.” (Fredrickson 9) This is because a positive mind is more creative. This then improves a person 's comprehension and their ability to make fast connections when troubleshooting, enabling them to better deal with problems and obstacles that occur. This also makes positive thinking an asset for employers. Teaching employees how to become more optimistic in their daily lives and at work will help foster a business environment of resourceful, savvy problem solvers.
In addition to spawning solutions, positivity can encourage succeed in the workplace by giving employees the positive mindset to achieve. The fact is when a person perceives a reality in which success is possible there is a better chance that person will succeed. This is because seeing the possibility allows people to put more effort and energy towards their goals. In essence, they feel their goals are reachable and fight harder to obtain them. Employers who promote positive thinking and attitudes in the workplace may begin to see a dramatic shift in employee relationships and the relationships with their customers. When an individual can easily see the positive side of circumstances, their whole existence and outlook on life can become brighter. (Fredrickson 26) This positivity affects not only them and the way they look at the world, but it also affects their environment and the people around them. Research has show being positive towards another person raises the chemical oxytocin levels in the recipient 's bloodstream, a biological response linked with lifelong bonds, trust and intimacy. (Fredrickson 45) This means employees practicing positive habits will have better attitudes with each other. Business where employees interact with customers directly can also experience better relationships with their customers. Customers interacting with enthusiastic employees are also more likely to walk away with a positive feeling about the business.
