Due to these colossal numbers, an abundance of citizens were intently listening as the Pope spoke about many issues political leaders tend to brush under the rug. Immediately, Pope Francis began his speech guaranteeing he is there for all American citizens and for those who continue to pay taxes, ensuring them that they are the backbone of America. Pope Francis continues his speech by calling out four Americans, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, and Abraham Lincoln. The Pope uses these iconic American figures as a transition to talk about the common good in hopes future Americans can reproduce their courageous efforts to fight for what is right in the world. Francis continues by addressing immigration, stating “We must resolve now to live as nobly and as justly as possible, as we educate new generations not to turn their back on our “neighbors” and everything around us.”. Politics serves as a perfect reflection of our “one-upping society” because opposing parties continue to work against each other or fail to compromise due to a complex where certain political views are superior to another. However, in reality we should all be working together as the common good to serve in our countries best interest and empower each other. For example, America continues to battle with issues such as immigration, the environment, military spending, and many more, but with constant contrast the issues remain as arguments and fail to be solved. Although, it seems as if America is stuck in a rut, Pope Francis’ statement about the common good did spark immediate change. Just a single day after the Pope’s speech, House Speaker John Boehner resigned from his position in Congress.
